Make sure you arrive with plenty of time to prepare yourself, at least ten minutes early. However, try not to arrive any more than 30 minutes early.
The receptionist and other staff may also have an input to the interviewer's decision, so make sure you are friendly and polite at all times.
Greet your interviewer standing, with a strong firm handshake and a smile. Sit up straight with both feet flat on the floor. Speak clearly and confidently, and try to maintain a comfortable level of eye contact throughout. Don't cross your arms or legs as this is considered defensive. Body language is vital in any face to face meeting, so try to use it to your advantage.
Always make notes if possible, as information provided early on in an interview could be vital but easily overlooked or forgotten when you are nervous.
Make sure you listen during your interview. Make sure you understand what is actually being asked of you and consider your answers carefully. Keep answers to the point and avoid giving too much irrelevant information. Remember you have two ears and only one mouth, so use them in that ratio!
Give positive examples from your background and avoid any negative talk.
Avoid one word answers.
Avoid asking closed questions.
Show enthusiasm for the role even if you have reservations. You can always turn a job offer down but can never accept a job you haven't been offered!
Never make negative statements about previous employers.
Do not mention the financial package at the first interview unless the interviewer mentions it first.
At the end of the interview tell them how interested you are and try and close for a second interview. This simple step is missed by the majority of candidates but can have a massive impact on your chances of success.
